PLEASANTVILLE — Looking to add a four-legged friend to the family this fall? The Atlantic County Animal Shelter is offering an incentive to make that a little easier.
The shelter will cut all adoption fees in half August 28 through August 30 as part of the annual nationwide “Clear the Shelters” pet adoption campaign.
The Atlantic County Animal Shelter has participated in the campaign for the past 13 years, according to County Executive Dennis Levinson, who said the promotion has helped lead to successful adoptions.
The shelter has dogs and cats of various ages, sizes and breeds available for adoption, and purebred animals occasionally become available as well.
“This is our thirteenth year participating in the nationwide pet adoption campaign held each August, and we’ve experienced great success,” Levinson said.
He also noted that the benefits of pet adoption can extend beyond providing an animal with a new home. Pets can help reduce stress, increase physical activity and provide emotional support for their owners.
Under normal circumstances, adoption fees at the shelter range from $85 for cats and kittens to $110 for dogs and puppies. Those fees include mandatory sterilization, age-appropriate vaccinations, diagnostic testing, a microchip and a free veterinary consultation.
Dogs adopted from the shelter also receive free obedience classes.
During the three-day “Clear the Shelters” promotion, those fees will be reduced by 50 percent.
The Atlantic County Animal Shelter is located at 240 Old Turnpike Road in Pleasantville and is open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. daily. Appointments are not required.

With the promotion taking place just before Labor Day and the unofficial start of fall, shelter officials are hoping the reduced fees will help more dogs and cats find permanent homes.
