Battleship New Jersey Secures $24.25 Million Upgrade

Our community's iconic floating museum is about to get dramatically better. The Battleship New Jersey Museum & Memorial has secured $24.25 million for a comprehensive redevelopment that will transform the visitor experience along Camden's waterfront.

This marks the biggest capital project the museum has undertaken since welcoming its first guests in 2001. The investment will fund three distinct components: a new onshore visitor facility, expanded parking capacity, and critical upgrades to the vessel itself.

The financial breakdown allocates approximately $9.5 million toward constructing the landside visitor center, while $5.5 million will create a parking structure at Wiggins Marina. More than $6 million has been earmarked specifically for improvements aboard the historic warship.

Funding the bulk of this ambitious project is $19.8 million in state tax credits from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. The credits come through the agency's Cultural Arts Facilities Expansion program, known as CAFÉ, which supports cultural institutions across the state.

The expanded visitor center will house additional exhibit space and educational programming, giving the museum room to grow its offerings. Meanwhile, the dedicated parking facility addresses one of the practical challenges visitors currently face when planning a trip to the battleship.

This project builds on recent preservation efforts. In 2024, the USS New Jersey made headlines when it was relocated from its Camden berth to Philadelphia Navy Yard for dry docking. That undertaking focused on essential maintenance work to protect the ship's structural integrity. The Wildwood Video Archive documented the entire dry-dock process in a detailed tour video.

The vessel carries an extraordinary military legacy. As an Iowa-class battleship, the USS New Jersey holds the distinction of being the most decorated battleship in U.S. Navy history. Its service record spans World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and operations during the 1980s before decommissioning.

Today, the ship stands as both a museum and a tribute to the countless sailors and Marines whose service took them aboard this legendary vessel.

The location already benefits from proximity to Adventure Aquarium, Wiggins Park, and Freedom Mortgage Pavilion. These improvements position the battleship as an even stronger anchor attraction, capable of drawing more visitors to Camden and encouraging longer stays in the area.

Construction is projected to span roughly two years. Work is anticipated to begin sometime between April and September 2027, according to current timelines.

Museum leadership has not yet disclosed how the construction phase will affect public access to the ship or what modifications to visiting hours might be necessary. Those operational details will be shared as the start date approaches.

More than two decades after opening its doors, one of New Jersey's most significant historic sites is preparing for its next era—one that promises to honor the past while creating a better experience for future generations of visitors.
