Cape May County Man Charged in Lower Township Stabbing

LOWER TOWNSHIP — A 42-year-old Cape May County man faces multiple charges after police say he stabbed another man during an altercation in the Villas section of Lower Township.

Lower Township police responded Aug. 6 to the 200 block of East Delaware Parkway for a reported stabbing and found a 23-year-old Villas man who had suffered a significant injury to his hand.

The victim was taken to Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional for treatment. His injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to police.

Investigators later determined the stabbing occurred nearby in the 300 block of East Pacific Avenue.

Police said the victim had arrived at a third party's residence when he was allegedly attacked by another man. The confrontation continued into the street, where police allege the assailant brandished a knife and stabbed the victim.

The suspect fled before officers arrived.

Suspect Identified as Whitesboro Man

Lower Township patrol officers located several witnesses to the altercation, and detectives subsequently identified the suspect as Sidney Gary, 42, of Whitesboro, police said.

Gary was charged with:

• Second-degree aggravated assault causing significant bodily injury

• Third-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon

• Fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon

• Fourth-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose

• Third-degree certain persons not to possess a weapon

With assistance from Middle Township police, Gary was located at his Whitesboro residence and taken into custody.

He was subsequently lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center pending court proceedings.

Police did not disclose what allegedly led to the confrontation or describe the relationship between Gary and the victim.

The charges are accusations. Gary is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
