CAPE MAY - Cape May officials have implemented a curfew affecting all minors following a council vote on Thursday, August 13.
The Cape May Police Department outlined the new requirements in a social media post, emphasizing that the restrictions apply equally to both residents and visitors to the shore town.
Beach Access Ends at 8 p.m. for Unaccompanied Minors
Starting at 8 p.m. each evening, anyone under the age of 18 cannot remain on Cape May's beaches unless accompanied by an adult. This represents a significant change for teenagers who previously enjoyed evening beach access during summer months.
The same 8 p.m. hour also triggers bag size restrictions that affect beachgoers of all ages. No one may carry a bag exceeding eight inches in height, width, or depth in any public area, including the beach and the Cape May promenade.
Medical devices and medical supply bags are exempt from the size limitation, according to police.
Citywide Curfew Takes Effect at 10:30 p.m.
The ordinance extends beyond the beach. Beginning at 10:30 p.m., minors are prohibited from being in any public space throughout Cape May unless they're with an adult.
The new rules mark a notable shift in how the popular vacation destination manages its public spaces during evening hours. Families visiting Cape May will need to plan accordingly, ensuring younger members of their group either return to private accommodations or remain under adult supervision once curfew hours begin.
