Christa Pike Speaking in Full Sentences After Botched Execution

Christa Pike, the Tennessee death row inmate who survived a failed execution last month, has shown measurable progress in her recovery, her attorney told TMZ.com. According to the attorney, Pike is now able to communicate more clearly, form full sentences, and walk more on her own.

The update marks a notable shift from Pike's condition immediately after the September 30 execution attempt, when she was left unconscious and unable to communicate after receiving two doses of lethal injection drugs. Her legal team previously described her as experiencing confusion, memory problems, and serious physical injuries.

Despite the physical gains, the attorney cautioned that Pike's cognitive and psychological functioning remain under close watch. A clearer assessment of whether the ordeal caused any lasting damage may not be available for another month or longer, the attorney told TMZ.com.

The recovery has unfolded alongside questions about the emergency response to the failed procedure. Recordings of 911 dispatch traffic indicate that 31 minutes elapsed before prison officials verified that a call for emergency medical help was genuine, a delay stemming from miscommunication between prison staff and first responders.

Pike was subsequently discharged from the hospital and returned to prison, where she continues to receive medical care.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of her classmate, Colleen Slemmer. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has halted executions while an independent review of the failed procedure is conducted.
