Coastal Flood Advisory Tonight for Three South Jersey Counties

Our southernmost communities should prepare for possible flooding overnight as elevated tides associated with tonight's new moon threaten to inundate low-lying areas across three counties.

The National Weather Service has issued coastal flood advisories for Salem County, Cumberland County, and Cape May County, with warnings taking effect at different times this evening depending on location.

Salem County residents should be alert from 10 p.m. tonight through 2 a.m. on Thursday, August 13. Meanwhile, Cumberland County and Cape May County will see their advisories begin earlier, at 7 p.m. tonight, lasting until 1 a.m. Thursday.

The severity of flooding varies by county. Salem County could experience up to half a foot of inundation above ground level, particularly in areas with lower elevation. Cumberland County and Cape May County face more significant threats, with potential flooding reaching up to a foot above ground level. The Atlantic coastal sections of Cape May County are expected to bear the brunt of the worst conditions.

Communities most at risk include those near waterways, where flooding typically begins. Coastal neighborhoods, bayside areas, and communities along inland tidal waterways should expect the most substantial inundation.

The National Weather Service warns that road closures are likely if flooding materializes. Officials strongly advise motorists to steer clear of any flooded roadways, noting that water depth is often deceptive and more dangerous than it appears.

Residents with vehicles parked in vulnerable areas should relocate them to higher ground before this evening's high tide cycle. Taking preventive action now can help our community avoid property damage and ensure everyone's safety during tonight's tidal surge.
