Detroit Family Finds Stranger in Mother's Casket

A Detroit family is demanding answers after a pre-viewing visit to a funeral home ended in a discovery no grieving relative should face: the woman inside their mother's casket was a stranger.

Kimberley Moore died recently in Michigan, and her relatives — among them her daughter, Bianca — were carrying out funeral arrangements that followed detailed instructions Kimberley had left behind. Before the official viewing, Bianca went to Hutchinson Funeral Home in Detroit to see her mother's body.

What she found was not her mother. According to Bianca, it was not the woman's face that gave the situation away.

"I looked at her feet, and I didn't see that mole that my mom has on her feet, and I looked at that man and I said, 'Sir, this is not my mama,' and he said it just like this. He said, 'I'm sorry. They must have cremated your mom a week or two ago. I'm so sorry,'" Bianca told Fox 10 News in Detroit.

The revelation left the family with two urgent questions: where are Kimberley Moore's ashes now, and who is the woman whose body was placed in her casket? Bianca said she wants the unidentified woman to be named so that her real relatives can pay their respects.

Hutchinson Funeral Home addressed the mix-up in a statement: "We are heartbroken and deeply sorry for what Ms. Moore's family has experienced. We have launched our own internal review to determine exactly what happened, and we will deal with it accordingly."

The funeral home's acknowledgment of an internal review does not resolve the practical and emotional problems facing the Moore family. Kimberley's relatives are still attempting to locate her remains, and the body of the other woman remains unidentified, leaving a second family potentially unaware of what occurred.
