Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees believes Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes will emerge from his ACL injury stronger than before, drawing on his own experience overcoming the same setback decades ago.
Speaking to TMZ.com this week, Brees offered an optimistic assessment of the three-time Super Bowl champion's recovery prospects, emphasizing both the physical and psychological aspects of returning from such a significant injury.
"I think there's no doubt that physiologically Patrick Mahomes is fine," Brees told TMZ.com. The newly inducted Hall of Famer acknowledged that the greater challenge may be mental rather than physical.
"There's certainly that, I think, that mental hurdle to get over just to say like, 'Hey, I can step into that, right?' Like, 'I can take that hit.' You know, can I just get past that psychological barrier of being able to turn it loose and not think about it at all?" Brees told TMZ.com.
Despite those potential psychological obstacles, Brees expressed strong confidence in the 30-year-old quarterback's future performance. "I'm confident that the best of Patrick Mahomes is still ahead of us," he told TMZ.com.
Brees brings credibility to his assessment through personal experience. As a high school junior three decades ago, he suffered the same ACL tear that Mahomes is now recovering from. His subsequent career—which included 13 Pro Bowl selections, a Super Bowl championship, and numerous other honors—demonstrates that such an injury need not derail an elite quarterback's trajectory.
The former New Orleans Saints quarterback also noted the significant medical advances that have occurred since his own injury, suggesting Mahomes has access to superior treatment and rehabilitation protocols.
Mahomes sustained the torn ligament during a mid-December game against the Chargers, now more than 250 days ago. While the Chiefs have not issued a definitive statement on his status, the quarterback is expected to return for the season opener—a Monday Night Football matchup against the Broncos.
The timing of his return carries significant weight for Kansas City, which managed only six victories last season. This upcoming campaign could represent a final opportunity for the organization to contend with its current core intact, featuring Mahomes alongside tight end Travis Kelce and head coach Andy Reid.
Based on Brees's assessment, Chiefs fans have reason for optimism that their franchise quarterback will not only return to form but potentially reach new heights in his post-injury career.
