MAYS LANDING — An Egg Harbor Township man has been sentenced to three years in state prison for attacking an Atlantic County corrections officer who was attempting to provide him medication, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
Unique Tyson, 29, was sentenced Tuesday by Superior Court Judge Donna Taylor after previously pleading guilty to second-degree aggravated assault.
The three-year sentence is subject to New Jersey's No Early Release Act, which generally requires defendants convicted of specified violent offenses to serve 85% of their sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
The assault occurred April 19, 2025, while Tyson was being held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
According to prosecutors, a corrections officer was attempting to provide Tyson with medication when Tyson attacked him.
The officer was struck more than 10 times in the face and lost consciousness, authorities said. Prosecutors said the officer was unable to defend himself during the attack and was transported to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.
At the time of the assault, Tyson was incarcerated after pleading guilty to second-degree possession of narcotics with intent to distribute and was awaiting sentencing in that case, according to the Prosecutor's Office.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Gangs, Guns and Narcotics Unit prosecuted the aggravated assault case.
