A fatal stabbing aboard a New York City subway train on Wednesday ended with the suspect in police custody and a community grappling with another act of violence in the transit system. According to authorities, 25-year-old Jyrell Thomas is accused of killing Mesias Lojano, a fellow passenger on the J train.
Police stated that Thomas appeared agitated and was pacing inside the train car before he approached Lojano and attacked him with a kitchen knife. Witnesses initially told investigators the assault appeared unprovoked, but authorities later indicated that an argument had occurred between the two men prior to the stabbing. Lojano sustained multiple wounds to his neck and chest.
Emergency responders discovered Lojano at the subway station, where he was unconscious and not responding. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident was partially captured on video by a bystander who began recording as the chaos unfolded. The footage shows the bystander pursuing the suspect through the station platform and onto the street, shouting for someone to secure the weapon. The chase continued into a parking lot, where the suspect climbed a fence and reached a nearby rooftop.
Thomas, whom police have described as emotionally disturbed, was taken to Jamaica Hospital on Thursday for a psychiatric evaluation, according to ABC 7. The case remains under investigation.
