Sean Grayson, the former Illinois sheriff's deputy convicted of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey, died Sunday at age 32 while serving his prison sentence.
Attorney Daniel Fultz confirmed that Grayson died around noon Sunday Central Time, according to TMZ.com. While Fultz declined to provide additional details, sources close to the situation indicated colon cancer was the underlying cause of death.
Grayson had been diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer in 2023. His legal team later disclosed that the disease had advanced to Stage 4 and metastasized to his liver, lungs, and rectum. The Illinois Prisoner Review Board denied his request for medical release in July.
The former deputy was approximately six months into a 20-year sentence for the second-degree murder of Massey, a 36-year-old woman who had contacted emergency services to report a prowler at her Illinois residence in 2024.
