George Poteat admitted to offenses stemming from separate incidents in Galloway Township and Atlantic City; plea agreement calls for five years in state prison
MAYS LANDING, N.J. — A Galloway Township man has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from three separate criminal cases involving ammunition, drug distribution and obstruction, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
George Poteat, 36, pleaded guilty Sept. 21 to possessing ammunition as a convicted person prohibited from possessing weapons, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute in a public zone, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, and obstruction.
Under the plea agreement, Poteat faces a recommended sentence of five years in New Jersey State Prison.
The charges stem from three separate encounters with police between December 2024 and July 2026.
Ammunition Found in Vehicle
The first case dates to Dec. 28, 2024, when authorities said Poteat was found with several boxes of firearm ammunition inside his vehicle.
Because of his prior criminal history, Poteat was prohibited from possessing firearm ammunition, according to prosecutors.
He was arrested and later released on those charges.
Crack Cocaine Distributed on Atlantic Avenue
The second case occurred July 22, 2025, in Atlantic City.
Prosecutors said Poteat was observed distributing crack cocaine from a pill bottle on Atlantic Avenue.
When he was arrested, authorities said officers found a pill bottle concealed in his groin area containing three bags of crack cocaine.
Poteat was again released following his arrest.
Crack, Heroin and Oxycodone Found During Galloway Stop
The most recent case occurred July 14 during a motor vehicle stop in Galloway Township.
According to prosecutors, officers detained Poteat as part of a drug investigation. Authorities said he resisted and struggled with officers while being detained.
During the struggle, police recovered a prescription bottle from Poteat containing 12 small clear bags of crack cocaine, 10 wax folds containing heroin and one oxycodone pill, according to the Prosecutor's Office.
Poteat subsequently pleaded guilty to the charges covering all three cases.
The investigations were conducted by the respective local police departments, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
