Gap has entered the handbag market with The GapBag, a debut collection that launched today and is already generating significant consumer interest. The fashion retailer's first foray into handbags features designs that draw from the brand's signature apparel, with prices beginning just below $65.
The collection was created by Reed Krakoff, Gap Inc.'s Executive Director of Accessories, who previously designed for Coach and has received multiple CFDA Accessories Designer of the Year awards. His approach translates Gap's most recognizable clothing items—including its classic hoodie and signature jeans with five pockets—into handbag silhouettes that blend accessible pricing with elevated design.
"For more than five decades, Gap's design language has shaped the way the world dresses. The GapBag Collection draws on that legacy: iconic American style, simple, never plain, built on the idea that form follows function and that luxury is the coming together of style, utility and design," Krakoff said in a statement.
The Gap Denim Five Pocket Tote has emerged as the collection's breakout item, with shoppers and social media users comparing its aesthetic to luxury Birkin bags. The large version of this tote incorporates design elements from Gap's iconic denim jeans, featuring dual handles for carrying, a detachable strap for shoulder wear, and a bridge snap closure. The bag is constructed from cotton denim with a soft hand feel.
Inventory of the viral tote is moving rapidly, with the item experiencing sellouts across the retailer's channels. A standard-sized version of the five-pocket tote is also available in both light and dark wash options, maintaining the same construction details as its larger counterpart.
The broader GapBag collection includes several additional styles. The Large Denim Crescent Bag and its smaller companion, the Denim Crescent Bag, offer curved silhouettes in soft denim with hardware finishes—gold on the dark wash and silver on the light wash. The smaller crescent style includes a zipper closure, shoulder strap, and interior slip pocket for organization.
The Denim Shoulder Bag presents a distinctive look with a belt cinched at its center, creating a gathered effect while maintaining a spacious interior. This style is crafted from the same soft denim material used throughout the collection.
Drawing inspiration from another Gap staple, the Hoodie Tote translates the brand's classic sweatshirt into bag form. Available in five color options, this style is made from a cotton-blend jersey material and features a drawstring cord closure, an embroidered Gap arch logo positioned at the front, and a kanga pocket. The bag includes shoulder straps for easy carrying.
For shoppers seeking a more traditional tote, the Canvas Favorite Tote comes in 10 different colorways. This cotton canvas option includes a bridge snap closure, one interior pocket, and three slip pockets on the exterior, along with shoulder straps.
The collection also offers bag charms for personalization, allowing customers to customize their purchases. The launch continues Gap's recent momentum, following collaborations with Hailey Bieber on a denim collection and the reintroduction of the brand's nostalgic fragrance line.
