Georgia Principal's Birthday Prank Becomes Viral Mentorship Story

A Georgia high school principal received an unexpected birthday surprise when students staged a fake cafeteria brawl, drawing him into a hallway confrontation that dissolved into cheers. The episode, captured on video and shared widely on social media, has drawn attention to the relationship between 51-year-old Bobby Davis of Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School and a student who credits him with turning his life around.

According to Good News Network, Davis was in his office when someone rushed in to report a fight in the cafeteria. He ran down the hall and found a circle of students holding phones aloft, with two youths scuffling in the center. Davis pushed through the crowd and grabbed a student he recognized, one with a history of fighting. The crowd then erupted in a chorus of "Happy Birthday!" — the scuffle had been staged as a surprise for Davis's birthday.

The organizer was De'Zayviun Watkins, 17, who told TODAY that Davis had changed his life for the better. Watkins, who was drawn to high school football, had struggled with anger and was prone to fights. Davis, who is also involved with the football team, gradually helped him reconsider his path and discover empathy for others, according to the Good News Network report.

Under Davis's influence, Watkins channeled his energy into poetry, music, and a goal of becoming an auto mechanic. With little time left at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, Watkins wanted to leave a lasting impression on his mentor, the report states.

Davis, who also spoke with TODAY, said students can tell when adults in authority do not genuinely care about them. He said the key to a positive school environment is compassion. "If your kids don't feel like they're loved and respected, they're not going to learn," Davis told TODAY. "If they don't feel safe, they're not going to learn. You got to know your kids for who they are. They know if you really don't care."

Watkins has described himself as a "bad kid," but Davis never accepted that label, calling him "a great kid" instead. In a comment on the viral video, Watkins wrote, "He single-handedly changed me for the better and he knows I could never take it for granted," according to Good News Network.

The video of the prank has circulated widely, highlighting the bond between a principal and his students at the Catoosa County school. The story was reported by Good News Network.
