Gladys Knight's Son Raises Elder Abuse Concerns

The son of legendary singer Gladys Knight has made explosive allegations against his stepfather, claiming the 82-year-old performer is being subjected to elder abuse through an unrelenting tour schedule.

Shanga Hankerson expressed grave concerns about William McDowell, who serves as both Knight's husband and manager, in comments to The Detroit News. His statements follow Knight's announcement last month that she would reduce her live performances after fans and tour personnel raised concerns about her wellbeing.

"He never intended to stop any tour dates, as you can see for yourself," Hankerson told The Detroit News, referring to his mother's continued performance schedule. He then delivered a stark warning: "My belief and fear is that he intends to literally try to work her until she passes away. And you can quote me on that."

The allegations center on whether McDowell is prioritizing financial gain over the health of the music icon, who has performed multiple concerts in recent weeks despite appearing disoriented during several shows. Hankerson directly accused his stepfather of exploiting his mother and characterized the situation as elder abuse.

McDowell had previously indicated to TMZ that Knight's September 5 performance in Tulsa would serve as a determining factor for whether additional shows would be canceled. However, he noted at the time that Knight herself wished to continue performing. According to social media reports cited by The Detroit News, that Tulsa concert ended earlier than scheduled.

Despite those concerns, Knight has since taken the stage in Terre Haute, Cincinnati, and Shipshewana, Indiana. The continued performances have intensified Hankerson's criticism of his stepfather's management decisions.

"The fact Mr. McDowell would even make a statement that further evaluation is necessary to stop my mother from working at this point, considering all of the blatant visual evidence the public is now seeing, should tell you everything you need to know about him and his motives," Hankerson told The Detroit News.

On Monday, September 14, Knight released a statement addressing her touring plans. "After heartfelt discussions with my team, I recognize that no matter how much I love lifting spirits in song, it's time for the midnight train to make just a few more stops," she said in a statement. "I'm finishing the year strong with my remaining performances. Looking forward to new ventures next year."

The statement suggests Knight will complete her current commitments before stepping back from the road. She has three additional performances scheduled for October, with her tour concluding in California in November.

The public dispute highlights growing tensions within Knight's family over her career management and raises questions about the responsibilities of those who oversee aging performers. Knight, whose career spans more than six decades, remains one of the most celebrated voices in rhythm and blues history.
