Greenville Overdose Crisis Under Spotlight After Actress Death

The death of actress Hayden Panettiere in Greenville, South Carolina has intensified focus on what local residents describe as a persistent opioid crisis affecting their community, particularly in the area where the actress died last Sunday.

A local advocate who previously struggled with addiction told TMZ that laced drugs and fatal overdoses have posed serious concerns in Greenville for years. The advocate, who now works to combat substance abuse, indicated the neighborhood where Panettiere died has become particularly associated with drug availability and use.

According to the advocate speaking to TMZ, the area has gained notoriety as a location where individuals can readily access controlled substances, with some residents allegedly receiving drug deliveries directly to their homes.

While authorities have not officially confirmed drugs played a role in Panettiere's death, a first responder indicated she may have suffered an overdose. The Drug Enforcement Administration has joined the investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Greenville has taken steps to address the overdose epidemic through expanded access to Narcan, a medication that reverses opioid overdoses. The city has worked to increase distribution of the life-saving drug while providing training on proper administration techniques.

Those efforts appear to have yielded results. Fatal overdoses in Greenville declined last year, a reduction the coroner partially attributed to wider Narcan availability and use throughout the community.

The timing of Panettiere's death carries additional significance as August marks Overdose Awareness Month nationally. Local residents plan to honor the actress on August 28 during Jessica's Walk, an annual event dedicated to overdose awareness and prevention.

The coroner has stated that Panettiere's official cause of death remains pending toxicology results.
