Our community witnessed an inspiring display of endurance and dedication as two local rowers completed a challenging expedition along the entire Jersey Shore coastline, paddling from the Cape May Lighthouse all the way to the Statue of Liberty.
Ryan Fisher and Kyle Rumaker, who spent eight years serving together as lifeguards, undertook the demanding journey to raise funds for coastal preservation and to support the next generation of beach patrol members. Their efforts generated more than $13,000 in donations, according to a social media post from Fisher's family.
The funds raised will serve two important purposes that reflect the rowers' deep connection to our shoreline. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the American Shore & Beach Preservation Association, a national nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring coastlines through scientific research, responsible management practices, and public education.
The remaining funds will establish a college scholarship for members of the Upper Township Beach Patrol. Fisher and Rumaker will personally select one or more recipients who demonstrate strong dedication to protecting local beaches and earn recommendations from fellow lifeguards.
Family members tracked the duo's progress along the coast, ultimately gathering to celebrate as the rowers reached their final destination at the iconic Statue of Liberty. The expedition combined remarkable physical stamina with a commitment to causes that directly support the beaches where Fisher and Rumaker spent years protecting swimmers.
