Mariusz Komenda, a standout competitor on MasterChef Poland, has died at the age of 44 after a months-long battle with brain cancer.
The show's production team, TVN, announced his death on Wednesday, paying tribute to the late contestant in a heartfelt post shared on social media.
Komenda's illness came to light in January, when he was hospitalized for what physicians at first suspected might be a stroke. Further testing revealed a malignant brain tumor. He later shared the diagnosis publicly on Instagram, telling followers that he had believed he was facing only a passing health concern until doctors identified the tumor.
His treatment was extensive. Over the course of his illness, Komenda endured two major brain surgeries, underwent radiation therapy, and completed intensive rehabilitation as he fought the disease.
Komenda first became a familiar face to Polish television audiences during the eighth season of MasterChef Poland in 2019, when his run carried him to the semifinals of the competition.
He was 44 years old at the time of his death.
