MAYS LANDING — A 20-year-old Mays Landing man has admitted to carjacking a food delivery driver in Hamilton Township last year and now faces an eight-year state prison sentence.
Rayquan Summers pleaded guilty Aug. 4 before Superior Court Judge Christine Smith to first-degree carjacking, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend an eight-year sentence in New Jersey State Prison. Because carjacking is subject to the state's No Early Release Act, Summers must serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
The charges stem from an incident on Jan. 11, 2025, when Hamilton Township police responded to a report of an attempted carjacking in Mays Landing.
According to authorities, the victim, a food delivery driver, had exited his vehicle to complete a delivery when Summers climbed into the driver's seat and attempted to steal the vehicle.
Prosecutors said the driver ran back to his car and tried to pull Summers from the vehicle. During the struggle, the vehicle moved several feet before Summers got out and allegedly punched the victim multiple times in the face, leaving him with a bloody nose.
Summers then fled the scene on foot.
A nearby resident witnessed the incident and followed Summers, observing him enter the Indian Oaks Apartments on Old Harding Highway. Officers responding to the area located Summers inside the apartment complex's laundry room, where he was taken into custody.
Summers is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 15.
Assistant Prosecutor Frank Edward Vizzi is representing the state in the case.
