The California Board of Parole has granted Erik and Lyle Menendez an accelerated parole suitability hearing, now tentatively set for March 2027. The decision moves their next opportunity for release more than a year ahead of the previously scheduled date of August 2028.
The brothers were convicted in the 1989 murders of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez. They initially received life sentences without the possibility of parole before being resentenced under terms that made them eligible for parole consideration. California's parole process permits certain factors to be weighed when determining whether an inmate's hearing date should be advanced.
Family members issued a statement celebrating the board's decision. "For almost 40 years, Erik and Lyle have worked to take responsibility for their actions, confront and heal from the unimaginable abuse and trauma they endured, grow as individuals, and dedicate themselves to serving others," the family told TMZ.com.
The statement highlighted the brothers' contributions during their incarceration, including their role in establishing a hospice program and creating Green Space. According to the family, these initiatives have fostered an environment that reminds individuals serving life sentences that their lives retain meaning and purpose.
The family expressed that the resentencing has enabled them to envision a future where Erik and Lyle could rejoin their daily lives. "Time together is something none of us can take for granted," the family stated, according to TMZ.com.
Describing the advancement as bringing them "immeasurable joy," the family said they are moving closer to a future with the brothers that once appeared unattainable. They indicated they are "incredibly proud of the men they have become" and "deeply grateful to the Parole Board for recognizing their efforts and allowing them to advance their parole hearing," according to TMZ.com.
The March 2027 hearing will assess whether the brothers meet the criteria for parole release. However, the scheduling advancement itself does not constitute approval for their release. Both Erik and Lyle Menendez were denied parole in August 2025, several months following their resentencing.
The parole board will evaluate multiple factors during the hearing to determine whether the brothers are suitable candidates for release after nearly four decades of incarceration.
