Miko Brando, the son of the late film icon Marlon Brando, has turned to the courts for help resolving a documentation problem that has blocked his efforts to renew his passport. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Miko filed a petition asking a judge to formally establish his date of birth after passport officials demanded a birth certificate he does not have.
The filing states that Miko was born on February 26, 1961, to Marlon and Movita Brando. He explained in the documents that his parents were "film actors and travelled quite a bit," and that his birth occurred in Mexico while they were on one of their trips. He also noted that his name at birth was Sergio Brando, though he has used the name Miko for decades.
Miko recounted that at age 5 he traveled to Mexico with his mother, where he was issued a Foreign Service ID by the U.S. Consulate in Mexico. He further stated that his parents obtained a U.S. Social Security card for him around 1965 or 1966. In the petition, he described a conversation with Marlon in 1979 in which his father told him he was poor with dates but believed Miko had been born on December 30, 1959 — the date that ultimately appeared on Miko's passport.
That passport, according to Miko, was used without issue for more than 45 years. The trouble began in April 2024, when he applied for a new passport and was asked to provide a birth certificate. Because he does not have one, he is now asking the court to determine his official birthdate so that his passport renewal can proceed.
Among the documents submitted with the petition is a letter Marlon wrote to Miko's school principal when the boy was about 9 years old. In the letter, the actor informed the school that he was taking Miko along on a journey to the South Pacific and requested that his books be sent home so he could continue his studies during the trip.
