LOWER TWP. - A Lower Township man who disappeared in 2024 has been identified through skeletal remains found in a wooded area of Middle Township earlier this year, the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office announced.
The remains belong to Benjamin J. Beason, 42, according to authorities. Lower Township police received a missing person report for Beason on May 22, 2024.
The discovery came on March 3 when a county resident walking through woods in Middle Township's Whitesboro section encountered what looked like human skull fragments and immediately notified law enforcement.
That initial finding triggered a comprehensive search involving law enforcement officers and search and rescue teams, who recovered additional skeletal remains from the area.
Forensic anthropology specialists with the New Jersey State Police analyzed the remains before sending their conclusions to the Southern Regional Medical Examiner's Office. Through that process, authorities confirmed the identity as Beason.
Investigators have not yet determined how or why Beason died. The case remains active as authorities work to piece together the circumstances of his death.
