A boating incident at a Cape May County beach this week has resulted in criminal charges for a Gloucester County man who allegedly operated his vessel while intoxicated.
Thomas Hinchman of Mullica Hill now faces charges after state police say he drove his boat directly onto Villas Beach in Lower Township on Tuesday afternoon. The beach landing occurred when Hinchman was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, according to authorities.
When state troopers responded to the scene, they reported finding an empty vodka bottle, providing evidence that would support the intoxication allegations. The discovery added to the severity of the situation, which could have endangered beachgoers enjoying the late summer weather.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. A towing company was brought in to haul the stranded vessel off the sand and remove it from the beach.
The incident serves as a reminder that operating any vehicle while impaired—whether on roads or waterways—poses serious risks to public safety. Boating under the influence carries significant legal consequences in New Jersey, similar to driving a car while intoxicated.
