Netflix Moves to Dismiss Tyra Banks Defamation Lawsuit

Netflix has formally requested a judge dismiss the defamation lawsuit filed by supermodel Tyra Banks over her appearance in a documentary examining her reality television series America's Next Top Model.

The streaming service submitted its motion on Friday, August 15, 2026, challenging Banks' claims that the documentary Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model presented her in a defamatory manner through manipulative editing techniques.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Netflix contends that Banks voluntarily participated in an interview for the documentary and executed a release form granting filmmakers extensive editorial control over the final product. The company argues she cannot pursue legal action simply because she disapproves of how her interview was ultimately presented to viewers.

The filing characterizes Banks' allegations of manipulation and surgical editing as fundamentally a complaint about screen time and editorial choices rather than legitimate defamation. Netflix's legal team maintains that courts lack authority to override creative decisions merely because an interview participant would have preferred alternative editorial judgment.

In a statement provided to TMZ, Netflix defended the documentary's integrity and fairness. The company stated that Banks received an opportunity to discuss her experiences openly and that the filmmakers presented her viewpoint alongside perspectives from all other participants featured in the production. Netflix indicated it stands behind Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model and intends to mount a vigorous defense.

Banks initiated her lawsuit in June, alleging the documentary employed deceptive editing practices that misrepresented her knowledge and response to serious allegations. Specifically, she claimed the film suggested she was aware a contestant had been sexually assaulted during production of her show yet failed to take action, instead exploiting the situation for ratings purposes. Banks further alleged that her responses during the interview were edited to make her appear forgetful or evasive when questioned about the incident.

Netflix has requested the court schedule a hearing on its dismissal motion for October 30, 2026. Representatives for Banks had not responded to requests for comment as of Friday.

The legal dispute centers on fundamental questions about editorial freedom in documentary filmmaking and the extent to which interview subjects can challenge how their participation is ultimately portrayed. The outcome could have implications for how streaming platforms and documentary producers navigate consent agreements and editorial discretion when featuring high-profile personalities.
