New Jersey Expands Early Voting for Municipal Elections

Our state has taken another step toward expanding voter access, as Governor Mikie Sherrill signed new legislation this week that extends early voting opportunities for municipal elections held in May.

The new law, designated A4745/S420 and sponsored by legislators Wainstein, Rodriguez, McCoy, Stack, and Mukherji, permits municipalities to begin early voting up to eight days before Election Day for nonpartisan municipal elections in May. This represents an expansion of four additional days of early voting compared to previous provisions.

Governor Sherrill framed the legislation as a response to federal actions she views as restrictive. "As President Trump attempts to undermine elections and make voting harder through his unconstitutional Executive Order, we will take every step to protect the integrity of our elections and ensure they are more accessible for New Jerseyans," she said in a public statement.

The Governor emphasized the local impact of the measure: "This bill will allow municipalities to expand early voting and ensure the people of our state have their voices heard at the local level, where these decisions will shape our neighborhoods, our schools, and our daily lives."

The legislation reflects an ongoing national debate about election administration. While supporters argue that extended early voting increases accessibility and accommodates voters with varying schedules, critics prefer a more concentrated voting period with traditional Election Day as the primary focus, supplemented by absentee voting in specific circumstances.
