CAPE MAY - A teenage lifeguard's instincts kicked in at exactly the right moment earlier this month, turning what could have been a devastating tragedy into a story of heroism at our Jersey Shore.
Ryan Gibson, a 19-year-old member of the Cape May Point Beach Patrol, had just wrapped up his shift on August 12 and was enjoying an evening volleyball game with friends on the beach. At 6:33 p.m., he spotted an 11-year-old girl being swept into the ocean by dangerous currents.
Without hesitation, Gibson plunged into the water and executed a rescue while still off duty. The young girl had already swallowed water by the time he reached her, according to the Cape May Police Department.
Several bystanders tried to assist in the rescue effort but were quickly overwhelmed by the treacherous ocean conditions that evening, police reported. Gibson managed to pull the child onto a nearby rock jetty, sustaining minor scrapes and scratches in the process.
Two other off-duty lifeguards, Matt Gibson and Cape May Point Beach Patrol Chief Ben Swan, heard the emergency broadcast and rushed to the scene to provide backup support.
"We as members of the beach patrol and Cape May Point community are incredibly proud of Ryan's heroic response and we are thankful that he was there," Swan told NJ.com. "This could have developed into a much worse situation if not for Ryan's decisive actions."
The Cape May Police Department issued a statement praising everyone who participated in the rescue. The department commended Ryan, Ben, Matt, and the other good Samaritans for demonstrating tremendous courage, selflessness, and a commitment to helping others when it mattered most.
The incident serves as a powerful reminder of the dedication our local lifeguards bring to protecting beachgoers—even when they're technically off the clock. Gibson's split-second decision and training undoubtedly saved a young life that evening on our shores.
