Oscar Winner Sues Over Luxury Los Angeles Rental

Academy Award-winning actress Da'Vine Joy Randolph has taken legal action against the company that leased her a Los Angeles luxury residence, alleging the property came with a litany of maintenance problems despite carrying a monthly rent of $17,000.

The lawsuit, filed against 421 NRD LLC, centers on a 5-bedroom, 6-bathroom residence spanning 4,452 square feet that Randolph began leasing in September 2024. According to court documents, the property carries a valuation exceeding $5 million.

Randolph alleges the leasing company represented the home as being in satisfactory condition prior to her occupancy. However, the actress claims she encountered numerous deficiencies upon moving in, including water-related problems, pest infestations, malfunctioning doors and windows, defective locking mechanisms, plumbing defects, irregular water pressure, and various safety concerns.

The legal complaint further alleges that when Randolph brought these issues to the landlord's attention, the company's remediation efforts proved inadequate. The actress claims the landlord ultimately suggested she could vacate the premises if the conditions were unsatisfactory.

The lawsuit accuses 421 NRD LLC of breach of lease along with additional claims. Randolph is seeking unspecified monetary damages and reimbursement for expenses she incurred as a result of the property's condition, including hotel accommodations during repair periods and pest control services.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about rental property standards in Los Angeles's high-end housing market, where premium prices do not always guarantee problem-free living conditions. Randolph won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in "The Holdovers."
