Seattle's Jimothy the Raccoon Becomes Internet Sensation

A Seattle raccoon with an unusual appearance has become the latest viral animal sensation, drawing attention from across the globe for his distinctive way of moving through the city.

The raccoon, named Jimothy by local residents, displays what appears to be a spinal deformity that gives him a shortened, rounded spine and body paired with elongated legs. This unique physical structure creates an unmistakable gait that has captivated viewers online.

Instagram user Kiana Hall first brought Jimothy to widespread attention when she posted footage of the animal running through Seattle. Her video captured the raccoon's unusual movement pattern, prompting her to wonder aloud in the recording about what she was witnessing.

The name Jimothy came to Hall instinctively. "He just looked like a 'Jimothy' to me. I don't have any other explanation other than I looked at him and he looked like a 'Jimothy,'" Hall told Today in an interview published July 18.

Following the initial viral moment, Seattle residents have reported multiple Jimothy sightings throughout the city. Social media users have documented his movements, with one X user sharing video of what appeared to be a younger Jimothy spotted in a friend's backyard. A dedicated X account now tracks every reported sighting of the distinctive raccoon.

"Jimothy has become very special to us," the tracking account posted on July 17. "Watching him thrive in the wild brings a lot of joy and reminds us how resilient and clever these animals are. Every sighting like this feels like a little gift."

The raccoon's popularity has generated tangible recognition beyond social media. Jimothy now appears on the Roku TV screensaver and triggers a special animation when searched on Google. The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum has created a commemorative bobblehead in his honor.

Seattle's Ballard neighborhood will host a celebration on Saturday, July 26, 2026, dubbed "Jimothy Summer" to honor their famous resident. The community event reflects the strong local connection residents feel to the animal who has become an unexpected ambassador for the area.

Jimothy joins a lineage of viral animals that have captured internet attention, with social media users drawing comparisons to other recent sensations. The raccoon's reach extends across generations, with fans reporting that even elderly relatives far from Seattle have inquired about his wellbeing.

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding Jimothy, wildlife officials have issued guidance for those hoping to encounter him. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife told Seattle's KIRO 7 that the raccoon demonstrates the ability to move and feed himself independently and does not require human intervention. The agency has urged the public to observe Jimothy from a distance rather than attempting to approach or interact with him.

The directive underscores the importance of allowing wild animals to maintain their natural behaviors, even when they become subjects of public fascination. Wildlife experts consistently recommend that residents appreciate urban wildlife without interfering with their daily activities or natural habitat use.
