Comedian Shane Gillis issued an on-air apology after he inadvertently used profanity during a live sketch on "Saturday Night Live" this weekend. The incident occurred during the October 10, 2026, broadcast, where Gillis was serving as host.
In the sketch, Gillis portrayed the son of the Cat in the Hat, played by Mikey Day. The scene involved a confrontation with Sam I Am, played by Andrew Dismukes, who was attempting to convince Gillis's character to eat green eggs and ham. The exchange escalated when Gillis defended his father, saying, "Hey, what the hell is wrong with you? My dad said he doesn't like them." As Dismukes continued to press him, Gillis responded, "Bro, it's a non-starter. He said he doesn't f***ing ... Jeez -- like 'em."
Gillis appeared momentarily embarrassed upon realizing he had sworn on national television, waving to the audience before resuming the sketch. Later in the scene, Day's character referenced the slip, calling Gillis a loser and criticizing him for using a "bad word" before ejecting him from the house.
Although the network's censors failed to bleep the expletive in time, "SNL" staff later shared a clip of the sketch on social media with the offending word removed.
During the traditional "goodnights" segment at the end of the show, Gillis addressed the mishap. "My thanks to Rosalia, and, uh, sorry about earlier. Thank you guys very much. I had a good time," he said, as reported by TMZ.com.
This is not the first time Gillis has been associated with controversial remarks. In 2019, he was hired as a cast member on "SNL" but was fired just days later after clips from his old podcast emerged in which he made anti-Asian slurs. Despite that history, Gillis has since returned to the show as a host, and this latest incident appears to be behind him.
