Malcolm LaVergne, the former attorney for O.J. Simpson who now serves as executor of Simpson's estate, is weighing in on the latest development in the long-running murder saga. In a statement obtained by TMZ, LaVergne addressed a new New York Times investigation that raises the possibility one of Simpson's associates assisted in covering up the 1994 killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.
LaVergne acknowledged that the public remains captivated by the case, but cautioned that repeated reexamination of the murders can be hurtful and even disrespectful to the victims' families. He noted that Nicole Brown Simpson, Ron Goldman, and O.J. Simpson are all deceased, which means none of them can provide a firsthand account of what occurred that night. LaVergne stated that he cannot speak for any of them and suggested that an endless stream of theories and allegations may offer little in the way of closure to the families.
Rather than engage in another round of speculation about a case that is more than 30 years old, LaVergne said he is concentrating on settling O.J. Simpson's estate and handling creditors' claims, including those brought by Ron Goldman's father, Fred Goldman. He indicated he would prefer to spend his time doing something constructive for Fred Goldman.
The New York Times investigation, as previously reported by TMZ, focused on Joseph "Joey" Ippolito, a convicted drug trafficker with ties to Simpson. According to the account, Ippolito's brother claimed that Joey came home on the night of the murders with blood on his hands and a heavy bag, and that the brother later disposed of the bag in a dumpster. Those allegations remain unproven.
O.J. Simpson was acquitted of the murders in 1995, though a civil court later found him liable for the deaths. He died in April 2024. LaVergne's statement comes as the estate continues to work through the legal and financial matters left behind, with the Goldman family among those with outstanding claims.
