A brother-sister team from South Florida has channeled their information technology expertise into addressing local food insecurity through an innovative mobile platform. Aashrita Kaza and her brother Anish developed Pizza for a Purpose, an application that connects generous community members with nearby restaurants and charitable organizations to facilitate pizza donations.
The siblings designed the application two years ago when Aashrita was in eighth grade. Since its launch, the platform has enabled the donation of 25,000 pizza slices to food-insecure families in areas including Broward County.
The application functions by allowing users to select a nearby restaurant and designate a local charity to receive fresh pizzas. This system eliminates intermediary steps in the donation process, ensuring hot meals reach recipients directly from participating establishments.
"The reaction really warms our hearts, their faces just light up the second they get the pizza," Aashrita told CBS News for the 'Miami Proud' segment. "It's very rewarding because it makes everything we do worth it."
The concept originated during the siblings' volunteer work at local charitable organizations. While they understood that some adults struggle to afford fresh pizza, witnessing food-insecure children proved particularly impactful. The siblings acknowledged they had not previously realized such conditions existed in contemporary America.
Their volunteer experiences revealed a gap between willing donors and organizations needing food assistance. The teenagers recognized that their technical skills could bridge this divide through a user-friendly digital solution.
Pizza for a Purpose is currently available for download on the Apple App Store. The platform continues to operate in South Florida, connecting community members who wish to contribute to local food security efforts with organizations serving vulnerable populations.
