Starbucks has unveiled a new iteration of its highly sought-after Bearista cup, introducing a Pink Drink-inspired version that launched on July 13. The release comes months after the original holiday edition of the collectible glass cold cup sparked a nationwide frenzy and sold out in stores last November.
The latest Bearista cup features a blush-colored bear wearing a white ball cap adorned with a pink strawberry topper, a departure from the green beanie lid that characterized the holiday version. The summery design celebrates Starbucks' Pink Drink, the strawberry-and-coconut iced beverage that became a social media sensation before officially joining the menu in 2017.
The new cup anchors a broader Pink Drink-inspired collection that includes an Owala water bottle, a belt bag with charms, and a hair clip shaped like the signature beverage. According to a press release, Starbucks merchandise strategy lead Kap Pitarys explained the decision to revive the popular item: "The Bearista captured the hearts of customers when it debuted last holiday and when we began thinking about future editions of this coveted collectible, the Pink Drink-inspired collection felt like the perfect opportunity to bring it back in a fresh, joyful way for customers around the world."
Social media response to the announcement has been enthusiastic, with Instagram users praising the design. However, the excitement has been tempered by anxiety over potential supply shortages. The original Bearista cup's scarcity last year prompted Starbucks to issue a public apology to customers who struggled to locate the item in stores.
Those concerns appear well-founded, as some customers reported difficulty securing the new cup on launch day. Social media posts revealed that shoppers experienced checkout delays that resulted in the item selling out from their online carts. The rapid depletion of inventory has already spawned a secondary market, with duplicate versions of the limited-edition cup appearing on various online platforms.
The Bearista phenomenon underscores the growing collector culture surrounding Starbucks merchandise, particularly limited-edition seasonal items. The coffee chain's strategy of releasing exclusive collectibles has proven effective at generating customer engagement and social media buzz, though it has also created challenges in meeting demand and managing customer expectations around product availability.
