An 86-year-old Mineral Wells, Texas, man known as Dale has spent close to four decades constructing a 62-foot steel vessel in his own front yard, and a spontaneous online fundraising effort is now moving his long-deferred goal of sailing it to Alaska closer to reality.
Dale began the build in 1987. The boat, which contains four staterooms, is approximately 75% finished. Two obstacles have kept it landlocked: Dale is no longer able to continue the construction work by himself at his age, and a steep hill separates the hull from the road, meaning heavy equipment will be required to relocate it.
The project drew fresh attention after three visitors from England — Laurence Benson, Benjie, and Will — learned about the boat and decided to stop by without prior arrangement. Once Dale began describing the vessel, his enthusiasm was evident. Benson, a content creator with millions of followers, wrote that Dale's passion was immediately apparent, adding, "The second he started talking about the boat, you could see it. He's as passionate now as he was 40 years ago," Benson told Good News Network. He also noted that Dale's dream is to see the boat on the water. During the visit, Dale climbed a ladder to show the group the deck — an effort he had not made in years.
Benson and his companions responded by establishing a GoFundMe campaign. The funds are designated for completing the remaining construction, acquiring the equipment needed to move the boat down the hill, and transporting it to a launch site. In a matter of days, the effort attracted more than 1,500 donors and surpassed $41,000 of its $45,000 target.
Benson estimated that approximately $50,000 will be required to relocate the vessel and place it in the water. According to the campaign, the fundraising will not conclude there: Benson is working alongside Dale's family to carry the lifelong ambition through to completion, and supporters are encouraged to continue following the GoFundMe page for updates.
For those who have contributed or spread word of the project, the campaign illustrates how substantial an impact modest assistance can have for someone who has devoted decades to a single pursuit.
