One student is dead and a second is recovering from a leg wound after a firearm went off unexpectedly inside a classroom at Atlanta Technical College on Monday, according to the Atlanta Police Department.
Investigators state that a student was in possession of a gun when it discharged, striking a fellow student in the leg. Officers were dispatched at 8:45 a.m. and found the injured student alert, conscious and breathing, the department's report indicates. An ambulance transported that student to a hospital, and college officials said the individual is expected to recover.
According to the police account, the student who had been carrying the weapon exited the classroom after the discharge and entered a restroom, where he was later found deceased from what investigators described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Authorities characterized the episode as isolated and stated that the surrounding community faces no continuing danger. The college reported that its campus was locked down following the incident and that normal operations have since resumed.
The case remains under investigation by Atlanta police. No additional details about the identities of those involved, the type of firearm, or how the weapon came to be in the classroom have been released.
