For the first time in three decades, passengers can travel by train between Sweden and Finland, as a newly restored rail connection bridges the two Nordic neighbors across their Arctic border.
Early one Monday morning in August, a train completed its journey from the Finnish town of Oulu to the Swedish border town of Haparanda, inaugurating a twice-daily service that reconnects communities separated by rail since the mid-1990s. The cross-border link represents a significant infrastructure investment designed to strengthen economic ties and expand travel options in the remote semi-Arctic regions of both countries.
The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency partnered with Finnish railway company VR and its subsidiary VR Sweden to establish the service. VR Sweden operates rail lines in the northern counties of Sweden, where the restored connection provides access to regional destinations throughout the area.
"By linking Swedish and Finnish train services, we are creating new opportunities for people to travel, work, study and visit one another across the border. At the same time, we are strengthening conditions for business and tourism throughout the region," Joakim Berg, chief executive of Norrtåg, told SwediJärnväger. Norrtåg, a supplier to VR, operates rail services in northern Sweden.
The restored service benefits from extensive electrification of the Finnish rail network, enabling trains to operate on electric power from the capital city of Helsinki all the way to Haparanda without requiring diesel fuel, according to SwediJärnväger.
A technical challenge posed by differing rail track gauges between the two countries has been resolved through engineering at the border crossing. A divided railroad bridge at Haparanda accommodates both track formats, allowing trains from each nation to arrive and depart using their respective rail systems.
From Haparanda, travelers can connect to regional trains serving multiple destinations across northern Sweden. Routes extend south to the university town of Luleå and north approximately 160 miles to Gällivare, which serves as a base for operations at a major copper mine operated by Boliden Mining.
Railway officials indicate that service improvements are planned for the coming months. Hannukainen at VR told High North News that enhanced connections will take effect in December when a new timetable period begins.
"The Finnish government and the municipalities in the region made the decision to launch and fund the service only last winter, by which time the Swedish timetables had already been finalized," Hannukainen told High North News. "We are working closely with Norrtåg, and as early as this autumn, passengers will have more transfer options available."
The rapid timeline from government approval to operational service demonstrates the commitment of both Finnish authorities and regional municipalities to restoring cross-border rail connectivity. The partnership between VR and Norrtåg continues to develop additional scheduling options that will expand travel flexibility for passengers using the international route.
