Authorities arrested a 19-year-old man Saturday in connection with a mass shooting at Virginia State University that wounded five individuals outside a student residence hall, according to the Chesterfield Police Department.
Camron Harris faces charges of malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony following the early Saturday morning incident in Ettrick, Virginia. Police discovered Harris concealed inside a closet at one of the campus residence halls after the shooting occurred.
The shooting took place in the vicinity of the Quad Annexes, a cluster of student housing buildings on campus. Five victims sustained gunshot wounds, with injuries ranging from critical to non-life-threatening. The wounded individuals include four males and one female between the ages of 17 and 23. Authorities confirmed that one of the victims is enrolled as a student at Virginia State University.
Harris is not affiliated with the university as a student, police said. Investigators have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack.
University officials implemented an immediate campus-wide lockdown following the shooting. The security measure remained in effect until approximately 8:20 AM Saturday morning, when authorities determined it was safe to lift the restrictions.
Harris is currently being held at Chesterfield County Jail, where he was processed and photographed. Investigators obtained arrest warrants prior to taking him into custody.
While no fatalities resulted from the shooting, one victim remains in critical condition. The incident marks another episode of gun violence on a college campus, raising ongoing concerns about campus safety and security measures at institutions of higher education.
