Upper Township Moves Toward Beach Tags for Strathmere

A long-discussed change could be coming to one of the few remaining free beaches along the Jersey Shore. Upper Township has taken the first formal step toward requiring beach tags in Strathmere, introducing an ordinance at its latest Township Committee meeting that would establish a fee-based access system.

The proposal has been under consideration for several years, but this marks the first time officials have advanced concrete legislation. Under the ordinance, beachgoers would pay $10 for a daily tag or $20 for weekly access. Seasonal tags would cost $45, though early buyers could secure them for $30 if purchased before President's Day weekend.

Veterans and active military members would receive complimentary access, with each permitted to bring one guest free of charge. The township plans to use roving patrols to enforce the tag requirement.

The financial projections show the program could generate approximately $230,000 in new revenue annually, while enforcement costs are estimated at around $24,000.

Not everyone in our community welcomes the change. Some residents voiced concerns that charging for beach access runs counter to Strathmere's character as an inclusive destination.

"Strathmere is not an elitist community," said Joyce Wilson. "We are a welcoming community. And I am very much opposed to beach tags."

The Township Committee will hold a public hearing on the ordinance at its meeting on Monday, August 24, where residents can weigh in before officials cast a final vote. That meeting will determine whether Strathmere joins the majority of Jersey Shore communities in requiring paid beach access or maintains its status as one of the state's few remaining free beaches.
