Actor Mark Ruffalo issued a vigorous defense on Saturday, August 22, against claims that his opposition to a massive Hollywood merger constitutes antisemitism, emphasizing that criticizing business relationships with foreign governments differs fundamentally from hostility toward any religious or ethnic group.
The 58-year-old Emmy Award-winning performer has emerged as a prominent voice against Paramount Skydance's proposed $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros, a deal announced in February that would consolidate control over major media properties including CNN, HBO, and Warner Bros under a single family's ownership.
Writing on X, Ruffalo characterized the antisemitism accusation as both appalling and fundamentally dishonest. He stressed that examining the actions of government officials, military technology agreements, or corporate executives involved in such arrangements does not equate to criticizing Jewish people as a whole.
The controversy intensified after Ruffalo condemned remarks by Safra Catz, Oracle's executive vice chair and a Paramount board member, regarding technologies Oracle provided to the Israeli government following the October 7, 2023 terror attacks. Catz had described these as "profoundly scary technologies" during a recent appearance.
In response, a Paramount spokesperson issued a statement on Friday, August 21, expressing concern about what the company characterized as antisemitic tropes being invoked in a business dispute. The statement asserted that applying certain terminology to a corporate transaction was inappropriate and diminished genuine suffering.
The company further stated its expectation that the merger would be evaluated based on legal merits rather than underlying bias, requesting less rhetoric and more understanding from all parties involved.
Ruffalo countered by highlighting what he views as his deep connections to the Jewish community. He explained that his political convictions should never be misinterpreted as hostility toward Jewish people, for whom he maintains profound love and respect. The actor noted that Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones have profoundly shaped everything he knows about acting, activism, and humanism throughout his life.
The proposed acquisition involves Paramount Skydance chairman David Ellison, 43, who is the son of Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, 82, a prominent ally of Donald Trump. David and Larry Ellison became co-owners of Paramount Skydance following a 2025 merger.
In his Saturday statement, Ruffalo argued that the merger carries significant implications for people nationwide. He contended that examining the Ellison family's business interests, including Oracle's operations involving data, surveillance technology, and government contracts, represents fair and necessary scrutiny given the potential threats to editorial freedom and employment for thousands of families.
The actor raised concerns about foreign financial backing for the deal, asserting that the influence of such funding on editorial decisions has never been adequately explained to the public. He called for greater transparency from government regulators before allowing the Warner Bros acquisition to proceed, claiming that lawmakers from both political parties have requested serious national security reviews without receiving satisfactory answers.
Ruffalo joined dozens of Hollywood actors and filmmakers in signing an open letter of unequivocal opposition to the Paramount-Warner Bros union in April. The letter expressed deep concern about indications of support for the merger that prioritize the interests of a small group of powerful stakeholders over the broader public good, warning that the integrity, independence, and diversity of the industry would be grievously compromised.
The creative professionals argued in their public statement that competition remains essential for both a healthy economy and a healthy democracy, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful regulation and enforcement. They contended that media consolidation has already weakened one of America's most vital global industries.
Paramount Skydance recently announced that its potential acquisition of Warner Bros will not close until June 1, 2027, allowing additional time for regulatory review.
Beyond this corporate dispute, Ruffalo has maintained a long record of political activism and outspoken opposition to the Trump administration. In January, he told Us Weekly that he would never say never to potentially running for office in the future, explaining that he has spent considerable time in the political world and views both acting and politics as endeavors for the people.
Discussing the current political landscape with the publication, Ruffalo expressed frustration with what he characterized as suffering among the American people, attributing the situation to failures by both major political parties that he believes have become completely captured by corporate interests. He advocated for a new America that prioritizes working people who constitute the plurality of the country.
