What began as routine preservation work ahead of a Ministry of Defense construction project has yielded what archaeologist Phil Harding describes as one of the greatest discoveries of his career. The find, located in Bulford just three miles from Stonehenge in Wiltshire, consists of two post holes and associated refuse deposits dating to 2,950 BCE—making it approximately 500 years older than the iconic trilithon stones at Stonehenge.

The seemingly modest evidence—two holes in the ground and scattered debris—nearly escaped notice entirely. Harding's breakthrough came during map analysis when he drew a line connecting the two post holes and observed the alignment. The line measured approximately 50 degrees off true north, corresponding precisely with the midsummer sunrise angle. "And so I got really, really excited about that," Harding told the Guardian.

Carbon dating analysis of organic material recovered from the rubbish deposits and post holes confirmed the 2,950 BCE timeframe. Based on the depth measurements of the excavated holes, researchers estimate the wooden poles they once supported stood between three and four meters tall. The posts were positioned 120 meters apart, creating a deliberate sightline for observing solar events.

The discovery has generated two primary theories among researchers. The first suggests the wooden post arrangement served as a prototype or experimental structure preceding the construction of Stonehenge itself. This hypothesis gains credibility from the 500-year gap between this monument and the erection of the large trilithon stones through which the solstice sun famously shines at Stonehenge.

An alternative interpretation proposes the site functioned as a campsite for the same population responsible for constructing the first phase of Stonehenge. Regardless of its specific purpose, the monument shares the defining characteristic of ancient structures across the Wiltshire plain: precise alignment with the rising sun during both summer and winter solstices.

Matt Leivers, senior research manager at Wessex Archaeology—the organization contracted by the Defense Ministry to conduct the preservation work—provided extensive analysis of the find's significance. The discovery offers tangible evidence of Stone Age religious practices and cosmological understanding embedded in the landscape itself.

"What we're seeing here is the religion of the Stone Age made manifest in the ground," Leivers told the Guardian. "Obviously we have no understanding of precisely what any of it meant, but the fact that time and again, over thousands of years, people are coming back to [the Stonehenge landscape] to build and rebuild and mark and remark this set of substantial events—it gives us an indication that this is religion. This is how they are understanding their place in the cosmos, how the universe works, what their deities are."

The repeated return to this landscape over millennia to construct and reconstruct solar monuments demonstrates the profound importance of celestial observation to these ancient communities. While modern researchers cannot definitively determine whether Stone Age peoples personified the sun as a deity or understood it through different conceptual frameworks, the archaeological record leaves no ambiguity regarding the religious significance of solar movements.

"We don't know what the sun meant to them. We don't know whether they personified it as a deity," Leivers told the Guardian. "But the amount of effort that's directed toward marking it and its movements leaves us in no doubt at all that this is a major religious event that's inscribed over the whole landscape over millennia."

The Bulford discovery adds crucial evidence to the growing body of knowledge surrounding Stonehenge and the sophisticated astronomical understanding possessed by Neolithic populations. The find demonstrates that solstice alignment was not an isolated feature of Stonehenge but rather a fundamental element of religious and ceremonial practice across the broader Wiltshire region during the Stone Age.
