Assemblywoman Rowan Throws Support Behind Zach Mullock, Says Democrats Must Unite

NORTHFIELD — Assemblywoman Maureen Rowan says Democrats hoping to unseat Republican Congressman Jeff Van Drew must rally behind Democratic nominee Zach Mullock if they hope to make the race competitive.

Speaking on WOND's Off The Press with Scott Cronick, Rowan discussed a recent meet-and-greet she hosted for Mullock at Josie Kelly's Public House, saying the event drew more than 100 supporters and generated optimism among local Democrats.

"I thought it went great," Rowan said. "There were over 100 people there. The vibe was wonderful. It was positive, optimistic, and it gave me some hope."

Rowan said she intentionally organized the event as an opportunity for voters to meet Mullock rather than as a fundraiser.

"Zach got into the race a little late," she said. "I think there are a fair amount of people who still don't know him or know what he's about."

She described Mullock as "authentic," "reasonable" and "rational."

"I just think he's an extremely attractive candidate," Rowan said. "People should really take a look at him."

Rowan acknowledged Democrats face an uphill battle in the Republican-leaning district but said party unity will be essential.

"The Democrats all have to get together — a united front," she said. "Nobody can stand on the sidelines. Everybody has to put 100 percent effort into getting Zach elected."

She praised former congressional candidate Bailey Winder for remaining active following the primary and said she hopes more Democrats become involved in Mullock's campaign in the months ahead.

Rowan also reiterated her belief that Van Drew should participate in more public forums and town halls.

"He represents the public," she said. "I think it's ridiculous that he doesn't have town halls and be out in the community."
