ATLANTIC COUNTY — Free flu shots will be available to Atlantic County residents at a dozen public clinics beginning Thursday, Sept. 17.
The Atlantic County Division of Public Health will hold 12 vaccination clinics from Sept. 17 through Oct. 6 at locations throughout the county.
The vaccinations are available free to residents 18 and older, and no appointment is necessary, according to Atlantic County officials.
“The type and severity of flu viruses may vary from year to year, but a flu shot still offers the best protection against infection,” Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson said.
“The vaccine does not guarantee you will not get sick, but it does help lessen the severity and duration of the illness and may reduce the likelihood of hospitalization or death.”
Vaccine updated for this flu season
According to the county, this year's flu vaccine has been updated to protect against three new virus strains.
Flu viruses typically circulate in the United States between October and May, and it can take up to two weeks after vaccination for the body to develop antibodies.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends receiving an annual flu vaccination before the end of October, according to the county.
Flu symptoms can develop one to four days after infection and may include a fever above 100 degrees, chills, body aches, fatigue, nausea and diarrhea.
People at greater risk of serious complications include adults 65 and older, children younger than 5 and people with chronic health conditions including asthma, diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease.
County health officials also recommend frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home when sick, regularly cleaning frequently touched surfaces and limiting contact with people who are ill.
