Brian Austin Green has opened up about the foundation of trust in his relationship with fiancée Sharna Burgess, revealing that complete transparency defines their partnership.
During an appearance on the Saturday, July 11, episode of the "I Do, Part 2" podcast, the 52-year-old actor addressed the topic of privacy and trust in romantic relationships, offering insights drawn from his own experiences.
"I think if you're brand new in a relationship and you're not even to the point where you've made it official with other people, something's wrong if you're feeling the need to go through that person's text messages," Green said, speaking to the podcast. "I think it's important for you to take a step back from it and decide how much is truly the other person and how much of it is your own stuff."
The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum acknowledged that individuals who have experienced difficult past relationships may struggle to break toxic patterns, though he emphasized the importance of not carrying those concerns into new partnerships.
When applying these principles to his current relationship with Burgess, 41, Green described an environment of complete openness. "To me a healthy relationship, everything's open. Sharna can go through my phone. She can go through my emails. She can go through absolutely everything that I have," he told the podcast. "I don't hide any of it and I love the feeling of her being able to do that and know that she's not gonna find anything that's gonna upset her."
Green further elaborated on his commitment to the relationship, stating that he makes it clear he will not make choices that would hurt Burgess or compromise their partnership in any way.
The couple began dating in late 2020 and made their relationship public on social media in January 2021. They welcomed their son, Zane, in June 2022 and became engaged in September 2023.
Green was previously married to Megan Fox from 2010 until their divorce was finalized in 2021. During the podcast episode, he reflected on how that relationship influenced his approach to future romantic partnerships.
"Until Sharna, my ex and I were together for almost 15 years. We were married for almost 10 years and I led with physical attraction," Green explained to the podcast. "First, I'd be physically attracted to somebody and then sort of build a relationship around that."
The actor described taking a fundamentally different approach with Burgess. Following his divorce, which he said he did not expect, Green pursued therapy to identify patterns he had brought into his previous relationship that were detrimental.
"I was divorced, which I didn't expect. I had three kids. I was a single parent," Green shared during the podcast. "And I knew that I didn't want to repeat things that I had done. So I went through all sorts of therapy and all sorts of things to really figure out what it was that I brought into a relationship that was just toxic and wasn't good and wasn't helping the relationship at all."
Through this process, Green concluded that establishing a genuine friendship before pursuing romance was essential. He emphasized that starting from a place of authentic connection creates a foundation where both partners can communicate transparently about their strengths and weaknesses.
"I think when you started from a place of a genuine connection with someone, then you're not so concerned about whether they are truly into you or not," he told the podcast. "Because you guys are already speaking to each other in a very transparent way. Sharna and I talked about our best qualities and our worst qualities together. We sort of put it all out on the table."
