A new study from AllClear.com has placed Cape May Point, New Jersey, at No. 16 on its list of the world's best birdwatching destinations, putting our community alongside renowned international sites from Peru to Scotland.
The travel insurance website evaluated popular birdwatching hotspots worldwide using eight different metrics, including the number of bird species present, the count of notable species, and a standout species score that measures prevalence. Cape May Point earned its spot by hosting an impressive 379 bird species, with 212 classified as notable.
What makes our local treasure so special? Cape May Point State Park sits at the southern tip of New Jersey, creating a natural funnel for birds traveling along the Atlantic Flyway. The park has earned particular renown for fall bird and butterfly migration, when thousands of species pass through on their journey south.
The park's diverse habitats—including freshwater ponds, dunes, and forest—provide ideal conditions for a wide variety of species. Visitors can explore 2.5 miles of nature trails while searching for rare sightings, and the site also features a historic lighthouse and a Nature Center with live animals, seashells, and exhibits on local history.
The study noted that Cape May Point experiences average temperatures of 13 degrees Celsius and average wind speeds of 15 mph, conditions that contribute to its appeal as a migration corridor.
Cape May Point was one of only three United States locations to crack the top 20, joining Dry Tortugas National Park in Florida at No. 12 and Moss Landing in California at No. 15. The top spot went to Manú National Park in Peru, followed by Tambopata National Reserve, also in Peru.
