A security professional at a Chula Vista senior living facility has reached a milestone that few American workers ever achieve: 50 consecutive years with the same employer without taking a single sick day.
Tom McKievick, who serves as head of security at Fredericka Manor senior living community, began his tenure in 1976 after responding to a newspaper advertisement. What he initially viewed as a temporary position has evolved into what the Bureau of Labor Statistics classifies as a lifetime career.
The mathematics of his commitment prove remarkable. Assuming McKievick took one week of vacation annually, he would have reported to work approximately 12,650 times over the past five decades—each time without fail.
"When I started I wouldn't think in a million years I'd still be here but I enjoy the residents and the work, and it's entertaining and it's challenging, and never boring," McKievick told Fox 5 San Diego.
