Clooneys Flee French Home as Wildfires Ravage Europe

Actor George Clooney and human rights attorney Amal Clooney have been forced to evacuate their residence in southeastern France as wildfires fueled by extreme heat continue to devastate communities across Europe.

The couple, ages 65 and 48 respectively, sent a letter to Didier Brémond, the mayor of Brignoles, expressing uncertainty about whether their 18th century farmhouse would survive the fires. The Clooneys have maintained their residence in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur community since 2021.

"Dear Didier, at this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment and as we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasise 2 things, first we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we'll be part of making it whole. We love Brignoles and our friends who live there," the couple wrote in the letter obtained by Us Weekly.

The wildfires have triggered mass evacuations across multiple European nations in recent days. More than 3,000 people have been evacuated from the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region alone, according to CNN. French and Spanish authorities have confirmed that more than 250,000 people total have been evacuated across both countries due to the fires.

The crisis has also affected Greece and Italy, where additional wildfires continue to burn amid the extreme heatwave conditions.

French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the emergency on Saturday, July 25, through a statement on social media. "In these hours when the flames are severely testing our country, France reveals what it is: a united people, standing shoulder to shoulder," Macron, 48, wrote. "Thank you to our firefighters, our military personnel, the civil security forces, our gendarmes and police officers, as well as to the farmers and entrepreneurs, who through their commitment and courage, relentlessly combat the fires."

The French president detailed the resources deployed to combat the blazes, stating that all civil and military resources have been mobilized, including civil security aerial resources, Canadair aircraft, Dash aircraft, water-bomber helicopters, and reinforcements from across France.

Macron also expressed solidarity with neighboring countries facing similar devastation. "Our thoughts also go to Spain, Italy, Greece, and all the peoples who are also facing wildfires," he wrote, adding a commitment to recovery efforts.

The Clooneys officially received French citizenship along with their twins in December 2025, according to a naturalization decree published by French newspaper Journal Officiel. The family's commitment to their adopted community is now being tested as they await news of their property's fate while the fires continue to burn across the region.
