A major infrastructure project designed to ease congestion at North America's busiest land crossing remains shuttered despite completion, caught in an escalating political dispute between the United States and Canada.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge, spanning the Detroit River between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, was scheduled to open earlier this year. Construction on the bridge, named for the Hall of Fame Canadian-born hockey legend who played for the Detroit Red Wings, began in 2018. However, President Trump intervened via social media, demanding that Canada share ownership with the United States before permitting the bridge to open.
The crossing serves as a vital artery for international commerce. Millions of trucks carrying billions of dollars worth of car parts, machinery, and other commodities traverse checkpoints along this small stretch of the U.S.-Canada border annually, making it the continent's most heavily trafficked land crossing point.
In June, the bridge authority scheduled a grand opening ceremony, only to cancel it at the last minute. Stephen Laskowski, president of the Canadian Trucking Alliance and head of the Ontario Trucking Association, was preparing to attend when he received word of the cancellation.
"I was heading out. My wife said, 'Your phone's ringing' … it said, don't bother going," Laskowski told NPR.
The current ownership structure involves the Canadian government and Michigan as joint owners. Under the agreement, Canada fronted the construction costs and will split toll revenue with the state once those costs have been recouped. This arrangement, however, has failed to satisfy the president's demands.
Political observers in Canada have raised questions about potential influences behind the delay. Some Canadian politicians have suggested that owners of a competing crossing may be connected to the president's position. The Moroun family, which owns the Ambassador Bridge linking Detroit and Windsor, has contributed millions to Republican causes in recent years, including a one million dollar donation to a Trump-aligned super PAC.
The prolonged closure of the completed bridge has created uncertainty for the trucking industry and cross-border trade. With the existing infrastructure already operating at capacity, the delayed opening leaves shippers, manufacturers, and logistics companies without the additional crossing capacity they have long anticipated.
As the standoff continues, the fully constructed Gordie Howe International Bridge stands as a symbol of strained diplomatic relations between the two nations, its economic potential unrealized while political negotiations remain unresolved.
