A delivery driver who was detained at gunpoint during the investigation into Nancy Guthrie's disappearance has taken legal action against Pima County authorities, claiming law enforcement caused significant damage to his residence while he was held without charges.
Carlos Palazuelos filed a notice of claim this week against the Pima County Sheriff's Department, Sheriff Chris Nanos, and Detective Earl Gieron, seeking at least $2.5 million in damages. The notice of claim represents a mandatory procedural step before filing a lawsuit against government entities.
Photographs provided by Palazuelos' legal team document the alleged destruction inside his home. The images reveal damaged walls throughout the residence, multiple holes in the ceiling, and scuff marks across doors. One photograph shows what appears to be a fist-shaped indentation in a wall, while another captures a cracked door jamb.
According to his legal representatives, the damage occurred while Palazuelos was detained for more than seven hours during the investigation. He was subsequently released without facing any criminal charges.
Two additional individuals who claim they were present in the home during the incident have also filed claims. Daniel Maddox is seeking $500,000, while Josefina Maddox is requesting $250,000 in damages.
The detention occurred as part of the ongoing investigation into the abduction of Nancy Guthrie. Pima County authorities have not yet located those responsible for the kidnapping, though investigators recently released copies of the first two ransom notes to local media outlet KOLD.
One of the ransom notes contains a disturbing claim from the writer, stating that Guthrie died shortly after being taken because the abductors had not understood the severity of her medical conditions.
The case has drawn significant attention as authorities continue their search for answers in Guthrie's disappearance. The claims filed by Palazuelos and the Maddox family add another dimension to the investigation, raising questions about law enforcement procedures during the detention.
