A breakthrough digital tool is transforming how farmers combat one of agriculture's most persistent pests, offering a path to dramatically reduced pesticide use without sacrificing crop protection.

The British On-Farm Innovation Network (BOFIN) has developed a field mapping system that pinpoints exactly where slugs are most likely to damage crops, allowing growers to apply treatments only in vulnerable zones rather than blanketing entire fields with chemicals.

Farmers participating in pilot trials reduced their use of slug pellets by an average of 50 percent. If adopted across the United Kingdom's arable sector, researchers estimate the technology could deliver annual savings of £6 million.

The innovation emerged from a three-year, £2.6 million project funded by Defra. At its core was an unconventional approach: enlisting 28 farmers as field researchers to gather scientific data about slug behavior and habitat preferences.

These "slug sleuth" farmers monitored pest populations in their fields using traps, collecting information about which soil types attracted the molluscs. Combined with soil sampling data, this intelligence fed into a computer model that generates customized risk maps for individual farms.

"No one has used farmers to gather scientific evidence like this before, so one of our biggest findings is that farmers can do research," BOFIN founder Tom Allen-Stevens told Positive News. "Farmers deserve more respect for their intelligence: no one knows the land better."

The mapping tool, now available free to farmers, integrates with automated pellet applicators that dispense pesticide only in identified hotspots. This precision approach represents a significant shift from conventional practices of uniform field treatment.

Slugs inflict £44 million in annual losses on British agriculture. The pests consume wheat, barley, and oat seeds, graze on young shoots, and can destroy entire vegetable fields. Crops including wheat and oilseed rape face particular vulnerability.

Farmers currently rely on ferric phosphate pellets for slug control, a treatment more costly than the chemical metaldehyde, which regulators have now banned. The economic pressure makes targeted application especially valuable.

Allen-Stevens acknowledged that trial results may have benefited from favorable conditions. The pilot took place during last year's dry autumn, when slug populations were naturally lower than typical seasons.

"We've got a big degree of confidence in the model, but we'd like to see it tested more," he told Positive News. "We're asking farmers to download the maps, give them a go and see what they think."

The project, formally titled Strategies Leading to Improved Management and Enhanced Resilience to Slugs—or "Slimers" for short—demonstrates how farmer-led research can generate practical agricultural innovations while reducing environmental impact.

The consortium's work represents a validation of farmer expertise in scientific inquiry, challenging traditional boundaries between academic research and practical agriculture. By positioning growers as active researchers rather than passive recipients of scientific findings, the project has opened new pathways for agricultural innovation.
