Dopamine serves as the engine of all goal-directed action, whether that goal is scrolling through social media or sitting down to meditate. The neurochemical does not distinguish between productive and destructive pursuits. It simply drives us toward whatever we have learned to seek.

Neuroscientist Kent Berridge's research has identified a critical distinction that reframes the entire conversation about compulsive behavior. His work reveals a separation between wanting and liking. Wanting represents the drive toward something, powered by dopamine. Liking, however, constitutes the actual pleasure derived from having it and is governed by entirely different molecules in the brain.

This neurological split explains why people can find themselves scrolling endlessly through content without genuine enjoyment. The behavior persists not because it delivers satisfaction, but because the brain has become trapped in what Dr. Richie Davidson and Dr. Cortland Dahl describe as hollow seeking. Individuals chase the next post, the next notification, the next piece of information that might finally deliver fulfillment, yet satisfaction remains perpetually out of reach.

The problem emerges when wanting decouples from liking. The dopamine system continues to drive behavior even when the reward system has stopped registering pleasure. This disconnect creates a cycle of compulsion without contentment.

Rather than attempting to suppress wanting through renunciation or detoxification, Davidson and Dahl propose a different intervention. They advocate for what contemplative traditions have long called savoring: the learnable skill of lingering in what is already nourishing.

This practice applies equally to a deep breath or a genuine conversation. The key lies in extending attention to positive experiences until, as the researchers note, one can let go of seeking completely and tune right into the delicious nectar that is always there.

The approach represents a fundamental shift in strategy. Instead of training oneself to want less, the goal becomes learning to like more. By strengthening the capacity to register and appreciate satisfaction when it occurs, individuals can restore the natural balance between pursuit and pleasure.

This neuroscientific validation of contemplative wisdom offers a practical alternative to the deprivation model of behavioral change. The solution to compulsive seeking lies not in eliminating dopamine-driven motivation, but in cultivating the ability to recognize and rest in fulfillment when it arrives. The brain can learn to pause, to notice satisfaction, and to allow that recognition to naturally diminish the drive for more.
