Federal immigration authorities arrested and deported British commentator Milo Yiannopoulos on Tuesday, August 27, 2026, after determining he had been living in the United States illegally for years—a striking turn for a figure who vocally championed strict immigration enforcement.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement took Yiannopoulos into custody at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Kenner, Louisiana, according to a statement the agency posted on X. Officials said he entered the country legally on May 14, 2019, through New York City but subsequently overstayed his authorization.
An immigration judge issued a final order of removal on July 22, 2026, after Yiannopoulos failed to appear for his immigration hearing, ICE stated. The agency confirmed to NPR that Yiannopoulos was deported back to the United Kingdom on Friday, August 28, 2026.
The arrest carries particular irony given Yiannopoulos' public statements supporting aggressive deportation policies. Last summer, he posted on X advocating for mass deportations, writing that the country must remove millions of people and that without such action, nothing else would matter.
Yiannopoulos built his reputation through inflammatory commentary on political correctness, feminism, and Islam. He first gained national attention two decades ago as a writer for Breitbart News, though he resigned in 2017 after video emerged in which he appeared to endorse sexual relationships between adult men and younger boys—comments for which he later apologized.
That same year, he launched a college campus tour that sparked widespread student protests over what critics characterized as hate speech. Among his more controversial positions, he compared feminism to cancer, claimed the United States has a Muslim problem, and established a scholarship fund exclusively for young white men.
Yiannopoulos distinguished himself from other far-right figures by publicly identifying as a gay man. More recently, he worked as an intern for former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene in 2022 and helped manage the brief presidential campaign of Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West.
His relationship with Greene appears to have created friction within conservative circles. Conservative activist Laura Loomer stated on social media that she had been calling for Yiannopoulos' arrest, claiming she was the first to report he was in the country illegally. She accused him of inciting violence against President Trump and working for Greene, whom she referred to as "Marjorie Traitor Greene," according to NPR. The agency did not specify what actions Loomer alleged constituted incitement to violence.
Yiannopoulos also drew criticism from Trump supporters after he questioned the president's independence during a 2025 podcast interview. In those remarks, he suggested Trump was controlled by outside interests regarding Israel policy, stating the president was "bought, paid for, owned and operated," NPR reported.
In its statement to NPR, ICE emphasized that the agency will not permit individuals in the country illegally to travel freely throughout the United States. Yiannopoulos did not immediately respond to requests for comment from NPR.
The deportation represents a dramatic reversal for a commentator who spent years advocating for the very immigration enforcement policies that ultimately led to his removal from the country.
